Disc golf, how to practice to improve your game

After you start playing disc golf and start getting addicted, you want to get better, and to get better you have to practice. There are 3 parts of the disc golf game that you need to practice to lower your scores, driving, approach shots and putting. The best way to lower your scores is to spend the biggest part of your practice time on the shots from 200 feet in, the approach and putting shots.

You should practice driving for 25% to 30 % of your practice time, and you should spend most of that time working on accuracy instead of distance.  In Minnesota and many other areas most of the disc golf courses are wooded and require you to be accurate to be in the fairway.  The distance will come as you learn the proper techniques, but if you are accurate you can still score good without the long drives. The majority of holes that you will play will be less than 500 feet, if you can accurately get your drive to the 250 to 300 foot mark and you are solid on approach and putting, you will make good scores.

The approach shot is the foudation for a good disc golf game, and you should spend 35% to 40% of your practice time on approach shots. If you can consistently put your approach shot within 15 feet of the basket, you will lower your scores substantially. The best way I have found to practice is to find a field with 200 feet of open area, have a target set up to shoot at and mark 200 feet and 100 feet. Practice from those 2 distances. Throw hyzers, strait and anhyzer shots at the basket and get good at all 3. Work with a few midrange discs and putters to find what works best for you for different shots.

The final part of the disc golf game is putting and you should also spend 35% to 40% of your practice time putting. The best way to get good at putting is to practice and practice. The best way to practice is to try the Mark Ellis putting confidence program, laid out in the video that is at the end of this article, it is worth the 21 minutes to watch and learn the techniques and principles of putting. The principles of confidence to create consistency will work in any sport and all parts of disc golf.

The numbers of how much time you should spend on each part of your disc golf game practicing are guidelines. If you are having problems with part of your game, obviously you want to work harder on that part but generally these are good numbers for practice time. Work on making your drives land where you want them to land, work on putting your approach shot within 15 feet of the basket and be able to make all your 15 foot puts and you will lower your scores substantially. The distance will come and the birdies will come when you master the basics.  Check out Disc Golf News for all news disc golf everyday.

I found out about, and started playing disc golf in 1978 when the sport was in its infancy. There was only 1 good course in Minnesota at that time, Acorn Park. I played for several years, and then took a while off. The sport is one of the fastest growing sports in the world, and I have gotten...

We too are disc golf addicts! my husband has been playing for 2 years and is quite good. He has been teaching me and I love it. He plays in local tourneys in our Central Calif. Series out of Visalia, Calif. We have a gorgeous course in our town called the Perry Championship Disc Golf Outback course. It's at Mooney's Grove and it is nesltled among beautiful Oak and euclyptus trees. Players come from all around to play here. We've met some great people/players. Disc golf is an awesome sport, our 22 year old son plays too. We love it. Thank you for the great article-very motivating!! keep em coming! :)
