‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ at the Covina Center until March 10

Perhaps the funniest play to grace the Covina Center for the Performing Arts’ stage this year, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” is now performing until March 10.

Based on the 1988 film by the same title, this is the story of two con-artists who promptly find that the French Riviera is not big enough for the two of them. To solve the problem, they agree that the first one to get $50,000 from an American soap star can stay and the loser will have to go. It turns out, however, that the American soap star is a lot less gullible that they had hoped for.

At the Covina Center, experienced actor Jeff Lowe plays the sophisticated con-artist Lawrence Jameson perfectly - his timing, his sense of humor, and his gestures are entertaining and convincing, and he gets genuine laughter from the audience.

Likewise, young Nicholas Herbst plays the streetwise con-artist Freddy Benson, delighting the audience with his moves, dances, and overall physical comedy. The audience expects a great “Ruprecht” and they get just that in Herbst.

Along with Stephanie Draude, who plays “The Jackal” artfully, and an ensemble of singers and dancers, they provide the audience with nearly two hours of true fun. You certainly will leave this play in good spirits!

Directed here by Wendy Friedman, this is the book by Jeffrey Lane with music and lyrics by David Yazbek that premiered in San Diego in 2004 and opened on Broadway the following year for 626 performances. “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” should be considered PG13 due to some suggestive language.
