Coach2Ride instructor Andrea Beach works with a rider on dual-sport riding techniques
Getting dirty in Colorado. And raising money for breast and ovarian cancer research. These two objectives have drawn a diverse dozen women to participate in the Adventure for the Cures, which leaves tomorrow morning from Keystone, CO.
The brainchild of Sue Slate and Gin Shear, heads of the Women's Motorcyclist Foundation, Adventure for the Cures will take a dozen women whose only riding experience is on the street and introduce them to the joys of riding some of the best unpaved roads in Colorado. In exchange for this opportunity, the women have raised more than $38,000 for the cures so far.
Here are the Dirty Dozen:
Peg Preble, from Boston
Daryll Drew, also from Boston
Carolyn Fitch, from Texas
Mary Taylor, from Vancouver, WA
Shelby Summer, from Seattle, and daughter or Mary Taylor
Karen Kime, from New York
Neda Skific-Lee, from Toronto
Cynthia Fata, from New York
Jasmine Bluecreek Clark, from Colorado
Genevieve Schmitt, from Montana
Alisa Clickenger, from Connecticut
Amy Holland, from California
The riders will follow a route developed by Sue Slate and Dan Patino of MonkeyGripper. Starting out from Keystone in the morning, the group will ride over Boreas Pass into the high mountain basin called South Park and down to the M Lazy C Ranch, which will be their base for a few days. Ride will include visits to attractions such as Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument.
After a few days in the South Park area they will move on to a base in Almont, a small town between Gunnison and Crested Butte. Day rides from here will cross various passes and visit ghost towns such as Tincup.
The by-then veteran dirt riders will end their ride on Aug. 16, back in Keystone, just before the start of the American Motorcyclist Association-sponsored International Women & Motorcycling Conference scheduled there Aug. 19-22.
A preparatory session today included dual-sport training provided by Coach2Ride trainers Andrea Beach and Bonnie Warch. The riders will use GPS units to stay on their route and an introduction to GPS was also offered today by Chris and Erin Ratay, a Boulder, CO, couple who combine their real estate business with adventure travel, and who hold the Guinness Book of World Records title for "Longest Motorcycle Ride (Team)."
