Direct from Broadway 'Sister Act' opens at the Music Hall

The Broadway Across America series presents Sister Act at the Music Hall in Kansas City on Tuesday January 21. The five-time Tony-nominated musical direct from Broadway runs on a limited engagement through Sunday January 26. “Amen to the season’s happiest surprise!” says the New York Post. USA Today declares, “Most entertaining nuns bar none!”, and examiner.com says, “Give it up for ‘Sister Act!’ Deloris and her sisters literally light up the stage!”

Sister Act features original music by Tony and eight time Oscar winner Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Beauty and the Beast, Newsies), with lyrics by Glenn Slater (The Little Mermaid). Whoopi Goldberg, Stage Entertainment, and Troika Entertainment produce Sister Act.

Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, the musical is the story of disco diva Deloris Van Cartier who witnesses a murder. For her protection, the police hid her in a convent, disguised as a nun. Under the watchful, yet suspicious, eye of the Mother Superior, she helps the other nuns discover their voices and rediscovers her own.

Ta’rea Campbell stars as the diva Deloris. She has appeared on Broadway in the Lion King, Leap of Faith (original cast), Aida, Little Shop of Horrors, and The Book of Mormon. Lynne Wintersteller who has appeared in Broadway/National Tours of A Grand Night For Singing; Annie; and Company plays the suspicious Mother Superior. Off-Broadway she has appeared in Private Dancer, Revisiting Wildfire, Closer Than Ever (she received a Drama Desk nomination and Clybourne Park among others.

Sister Act features an original musical score by Menken and Slater presenting musical styles of disco, funk, and soul. The music director is Brent-Alan Huffman with orchestrations by Doug Besterman. Klara Zieglerova designed the scenery, lighting by Natasha Katz, sound by John Sivers, and costumes by Lez Brotherston.

Sister Act runs Tuesday January 21 through Friday January 24 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday January 25 performances at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday at 1 and 6:30 p.m. Purchase tickets by calling Ticketmaster at 800-745-3000 or at the Music Hall Box Office 301 W. 13 Street.
