Every few years, a nonconventional color emerges as the hot trend in nail polish. Who can forget the gothicly-named Urban Decay hues, or the bright metallic bottles featured on the last page of your 1997 Delia's catalog? (I personally recall ordering a coveted bottle of sparkly mint-green lacquer that year).
Recently gray has been seen on the fingertips of fashion lovers from couture runways to reual areas. Putty shades and concrete colors are a lighter, airier alternative to the harsh black polish popularized by Chanel's fabulous Black Satin shade.
Both Chanel and nail fashion giant OPI have pricier gray options (the aforementioned Black Satin and Give Me the Moon, respectively), but drugstore bottles provide the same pop for less cash. Try Essie's Chinchilly or Sally Hansen's Wet Cement, both easily accessible, good-quality polishes.
