Dinos advance to CIS Nationals despite losing conference titles

The University of Calgary Dinos are still going to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championships in women's basketball and women's hockey, despite losing in their Canada West Conference championships in Calgary on the weekend.

In women's basketball on Saturday, the University of Regina Cougars defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 53-37 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium after the Dinos had beaten the University of Alberta Pandas 66-56 on Friday night in the Canada West Conference semi-final.

According to www.godinos.com, the Cougars were very impressive defensively in limiting the Dinos to only 17 second half points. As a team, the Cougars had 41 defensive points. Kehlsie Crone of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan and Lindsay Ledingham of Regina had 11 points each to lead the Cougars in scoring.

The Dinos will play their opening quarterfinal game in the CIS National Women's Basketball Championship on March 15 in Regina.

Meanwhile, in women's hockey, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 5-2 Sunday night at Father David Bauer Arena to win the Canada West Conference title 2-1 in the best-out-of-three series.

The Dinos will open the 2013 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women's hockey championship against the University of St. Francis Xavier X-Women Thursday in Toronto.
