Looking for an easy way to support Literacy on Kauai. This is it! All you have to do is dine out at Plantation Garden’s Restaurant on Thursday, February 6th, 2014 and a portion of your bill will go directly to buy books for preschool and kindergarten students right here on Kauai. The Dine Out for Literacy event is supporting Read Across Kauai Day (February 28th, 2014), which was designated by Mayor Bernard Carvalho Jr. to increase awareness about the importance of literacy, provide books for children, and provide information to parents about the importance of reading to their children at home.
The Kauai Children’s Authors Guild spearheaded this movement because of the startling literacy statistics. For example, about 40% of eight-year-olds cannot read independently, and those children who struggle often get left behind. As a result, local Kauai authors from the Guild will be volunteering their time to go into classrooms across the Garden sland to read to the children on February 28th. The children will get an opportunity interact with the authors and ask them questions about writing and illustrating books. The idea is to help children make personal connections with the books that are read to them, so they will be more excited about reading at home. Some of the authors will also be on hand at the restaurant to discuss literacy during the Dine Out for Literacy event on February 6th.
