My three winners at the launch of Dine About Town San Francisco 2013 Part One (running January 15 - 31 at the restaurants listed below) were Luce for a sublime oyster shooter, Momo’s for succulent tuna tartare on a crispy base and Plouf for a delicate and delicious beet salad with a horseradish cream.
Then came Garcon’s salmon rillettes served on rosemary lavash crackers with meyer lemon cucumber relish with chiliflakes and roasted garlic. The Radius pork belly rillettes with red onion and agre dulce on crostini was pretty tasty. The chicken salad from B44 was fresh, delicious and substantial. Loved the little persimmon millefeuille bites from Chaya Brasserie and the involved savory version of a tiramisu from Bisou French Bistro. Chouchou did something delicious with anchovies and later in the evening, with apricots.
Peju Province, meanwhile, poured a pretty decent merlot (didn’t so much like their red and white blend, Tess) and the pair at the Herradura Tequila table kept pouring with remarkable good will and equanimity all evening.
I will stop there as no point mentioning what I didn’t like so much. Tastebuds and preferences are so personal.
But I will suggest that all restaurants, at future Dine About launches, make a note in a visible place of what exactly it is they’re serving, along with the ingredients therein, which a few did. But too few.
Yes one can ask. Yes, it’s better not to have to.
I will also note that I have just been away from San Francisco for some months. And people who live here — know how lucky you are! It is one of the great food cities of the world. Not just Dine About — but to be able to drop into one of dozens of restaurants dotted around the Bay Area and consistently to dine happily. It doesn’t happen everywhere in the US or in many other parts of the world.
