Conrad Bain, 89, has passed away, according to Jan. 16 Fox News reports. Bain played the father, Mr. Philip Drummonds in the popular family sitcom, “Different Strokes.” The show debuted on NBC in 1979, a time when television comedies didn’t break from the norm.
Reports state that Conrad died of natural causes Monday night in Livermore, Calif. Bain’s daughter, Jennifer, issued a statement saying that her father “was an amazing person. He was a lot like Mr. Drummond, but much more interesting in real life. He was an amazing father.”
Todd Bridges, who played Willis, the older adopted brother on “Different Strokes,” is the last surviving member of the television family. Dana Plato, who played Kimberly, died in 1999 due to a drug overdose. Gary Coleman, who played Arnold, died in 2010 after he fell down the stairs in his home.
Todd issued his own statement to Fox News, "I am deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Conrad as we were looking forward to celebrating his 90th birthday next month. In addition to being a positive and supportive father figure both on and off-screen, Conrad was well-loved and made going to work each day enjoyable for all of us. He will be missed, but never forgotten."
Conrad Bain is survived by three children: Jennifer, Kent and Mark.
