The story of the cast of "Diff'rent Strokes," especially the younger, is tragic. Two dead, Dana Plato and Gary Coleman and one, Todd Bridges, had a serious drug habit that he had been fighting for many years. Today, Jan. 16, 2013, sees the death of Conrad Bain who played the father of Kimberly (Plato) who took in two African-American boys into his home. The two boys were the sons of the families maid.
Bain lived to be 89-years-old, which is the oldest living member of the four major stars.
Conrad hailed from Canada, (served in the Canadian Army during WWII), and became a naturalized American citizen in the 40s.
A success on stage in such shows as "The Iceman Cometh" which was on Broadway morphed into TV success.
"Maude," a spin-off of "All in the Family" starred Bain as a stiff, republican neighbor. The show ran from 1972-1978. He did a few guest spots on popular TV show such as "The Love Boat" and then bagged the part on "Diff'rent Strokes" which ran from 1978-1986.
Bain's family said he died of natural causes.
He is survived by three sons and a daughter. His wife, Monica Sloan passed in 2009. He also leaves a twin brother. No word yet on services.
RIP Conrad Bain, thanks for the laughs.
