Diet resolution: Know your body fat percentage – Part 2 of 4

So, what’s all the fuss about body fat percentage?

For a successful beginning, start your diet by finding out your body’s fat percentage. According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the average adult female should maintain an acceptable range of 25-31% for Body Fat Percentage (BFP). The average adult male’s fat percentages are much lower; 18-25%. Obesity is determined when you reach 1% higher than the above parameters.

So What Does All This Mean To You? Set your weight loss goals in line with your BMI (Body Mass Index) and your BFP (Body Fat Percentage) in order to achieve optimum overall health. Your BMI determines your ideal healthy weight for your height. The CDC (Center for Disease Control & Prevention) has an easy BMI Calculator for adults and children at .

Here’s A Simplified Body Fat Formula. For this example Amy, a 5’ 5” 150 pound woman with a BMI of 25 (overweight), wishes to reduce her body fat from 50% to 25%.

The Formula Is Shown As:

150 pounds x 0.25 = 37.5 pounds body fat

She has 100 pounds lean body mass + 37.5 pounds body fat = 137.5 pounds is the weight goal.

150 pounds – 137.5 pounds weight goal = 12.5 pounds of fat to lose

So, for Amy to achieve a healthy lean body she would need to lose only 12.5 pounds of fat, reducing her current weight from her 150 pounds to 137.5 pounds. Then she would reach a BMI of 22 placing her within the normal range of 18.5–24.9 for women or men and her BFP would be at 25%. If she were to lose more than 12.5 pounds she would be in danger of losing lean body mass.
