What do you think of when you hear the word "diet"? Do you dread the thought of it? Does it sound like you will have to give up on the things you enjoy eating now? Have you tried all the plans out there without success?

The truth is, diets don't work. Afterall it has the word "die" in it. Who wants to hear that. It is shown that more than 50% of those who go on a diet do not succeed. Sure, you may lose weight initially, but once you stop the diet, you return to old patterns. You start eating foods that were eliminated or cut back, you stop exercising, and fall back into old habits. If you want to regain health, you must make a Lifestyle change. That is why it is important to work with someone who will be there weekly or more frequently to guide you, educate you, and provide support. The success rate is huge when people make the lifestyle change this way. Changing the way you think about this process is key. Some important components are listed below.

Some costly mistakes related to the diet mentality are:

  1. Not having a plan.
  2. Not eating enough.
  3. Eliminating certain food groups.
  4. Finishing every bite, even when you know you are full.
  5. Not drinking enough water.
  6. Having a negative attitude.
  7. Not believing in yourself that you can make the changes.
  8. Lack of support.
  9. Confusion over what is right for you.
  10. Thinking that you are destined to be overweight because it's in your genes.
  11. Not living each day to it's fullest.
  12. Skipping breakfast.
  13. Drinking too many sugary drinks.
  14. Obsessing over the calories you intake.
  15. Eating more processed foods than fresh.

This is a short list for sure, but some very key components are included here. There is so much information out there regarding what you should and should not eat it's no wonder everyone is confused. Who do you believe? Who can you trust? Which program is right for you? This list goes on and on and becomes mind boggling.

By working with a qualified health practitioner, whether it is a health coach, dietician, nutritionist, personal trainer or holistic health practitioner, you will be able to find the right program for you. Look for someone who will be there with you to guide, support and educate you along the way so you will have the tools needed to be successful. It is possible to change, people do it every day. The difference is having a guiding hand and believing you will do this. Do not give up, you can do this!
