Diem Brown is grateful to be alive after undergoing an emergency hysterectomy for colon cancer, but her dreams of pregnancy and childbirth are gone forever, People reported.
Brown, 32, is battling cancer for the third time. Diem was recently diagnosed with colon cancer after having battled ovarian cancer in 2003 and again in 2012. Brown underwent two separate surgeries on Aug. 17 after collapsing on the set of a reality TV show she was filming abroad.
Brown was immediately airlifted to a New York City hospital, where doctors discovered that a cancerous tumor was blocking her colon. They also found cancer in her stomach lining, and Diem now has a colostomy bag.
Sadly, the latest round of cancer and surgeries has dashed her longtime hopes of pregnancy and motherhood (via childbirth), even though the MTV star froze her eggs in 2012.
"When I came to, they told me that they couldn't save my uterus," said Brown. "That was a blow. We'd fought so hard to keep it. Might sound silly to most, but it's what made me still feel like a woman and gave me hope for a future. I felt empty, gutted."
Aggressive Cancer Despite Youth and Great Health
Brown remains in the ICU unit of a New York hospital, where she is expected to remain for at least another week. Brown first became famous after appearing on MTV's Real World/Road Rules Challenge. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2003 (at age 23) and underwent surgery to have an ovary and part of her fallopian tube removed.
When her ovarian cancer returned in 2012, Diem was shocked because she didn't know ovarian cancer could return. Prior to her recent colon cancer diagnosis, Brown got tested every two months.
Brown's cancer battles are especially shocking because she has always been a workout fanatic who exercised daily and followed a healthy diet. She is an avid runner and athlete, and was a top competitor on the various MTV Challenges she participated in over the years.
Despite her pregnancy dreams being dashed, Brown is grateful to be alive. "I might not have the ability to ever carry a child and I have this damn bag for the time being – but I'm alive," she said.
