To say that the opening of “Die Posers Die!” this past Saturday was a success is probably an understatement.

By 7PM – the time the doors of the Alva Skateshop/Exhibit A Gallery were scheduled to open – the line of attendees earnestly waiting outside was just as long as the city block on Fairfax Avenue.

Inside, a lot of prep was still under way – photographers snapping images of artworks, exhibiting artists signing posters, media crews setting up lights and cameras.

Although it did not take long for the public to cram the place, the vibe remained positive throughout the event. Along with the gallery’s Creative Director Richard Villa III, Tony Alva was a busy host, diligently catering for the media, friends and fans alike.

On the walls inside, the works of Jason AdamsSteve Caballero, David Hackett, Christian Hosoi, Mimi Knoop, Lance Mountain, Pat Ngoho, Chris Pastras and Clint Peterson (among others) were examined by the scrutinizing eyes of the audience. The path of art led to the outside backyard where everybody hung out while sipping beer, soft drinks and blends of Transphusion and vodka.

Like other fellow Brazilian skaters living in SoCal these days, before coming to US, Luiz paid his dues in his home country. After publishing his own fanzine, he got hired by local Yeah! magazine as a photographer and writer. A year later, he got picked up by Skatin' and soon became its award...
