National Donut Day might be one of the lesser known holidays, but it certainly ranks up there with the greatest.  Started in 1938, it happens every year on the first Friday of June as a benefit for the Salvation Army.  Nationally, chains such as Dunkin' Donuts and Krispy Kreme offer promotions such as a free donut with purchase of a beverage.

If you missed National Donut Day this year, be sure to mark your calendar and keep on the lookout for next year's specials.

In the meantime, you can soothe your woes by checking out one of this city's hottest regional specialties: boudin kolaches, served hot at the Shipley's Do-nuts on North Main (5200 N. Main).  This much-sought after special is only available on Saturday mornings, and sells out stunningly fast.  One recent weekend, they were already gone by 8:30 AM!  So it might be wise to call ahead to make sure they haven't run out yet ((713) 869-4636).
