Did Variety.com story let the cat out of the bag for The Walking Dead?

ATTENTION:  Possible spoiler alert!

On Sunday, website Variety.com posted a story that actor Jon Bernthal, who currently plays controversial character deputy Shane Walsh on AMC's hit The Walking Dead, is in talks with TNT to star in their period drama, "L.A. Noir."  The show is being spearheaded by none other than Frank Darabont, who helmed the first season of The Walking Dead before unceremoniously leaving the show last year.

The Walking Dead returns on Sunday, February 12 and airs in Riverside on DirecTV channel 254, Dish Network channel 130 and Time Warner Cable channel 75.

According to the article, Bernthal would play the central character of the series, a Los Angeles cop named Joe Teague.

Given that the actor also plays a significant role in The Walking Dead, it leaves fans to wonder - does this mean the end for Shane?  Although season two has already completed filming, it seems highly unlikely that the actor would be able to return for a third, at least in any major capacity, while tackling the lead in another series.

The first half of this season of The Walking Dead has certainly shown the character of Shane sliding down a slippery slope with questionable moral choices and a feeling that he is teetering on the brink of insanity.  It certainly wouldn't be out of the realm of reason that the deputy could go off the rails enough to bring permanent - and perhaps fatal - consequences, especially with the shocking mid-season finale that brought him face-to-face with poor undead Sophia, not to mention the news that he could be a father, though not a welcome one.  Or perhaps the show will let him ride off into the sunset to allow for a future return, though if AMC follows the comic with any loyalty, Shane has already lived well past what he should have.

What say you, Walking Dead fans?  Is this good news?  Would you like to see Shane continue on?  Kill him off?
