As reported in the Mint Press News on August 29, 2013, the Jabhut al-Nusar militia, an al-Qaeda affiliated militia headquartered in Iraq, transported and released the Sarin gas used in the Ghouta gas attack. Mint Press reporter Yahya Ababneh was on the ground in Ghouta and spoke with members of the Jabhut al-Nusar militia and other rebels and their families who were directly affected by the gas. It was they who told him that the sarin gas had been provided by Saudi Prince Bandar bin Sultan. The gas was alleged to have been formulated in a former Iraqi chemical weapons factory.
The sarin gas was purportedly released by untrained members of the Jabhut al-Nusar militia in the town of Ghouta Sham. This allegation has been substantiated by Doctors without Borders who treated the injured survivors, including injured Jabhut militia members who complained that they had not been properly trained in the use of the gas weapons they had transported into Syria from Iraq. The Jabhut al-Nusar is reputed to be uncooperative and to maintain little communications with the other Syrian militias fighting against the Assad regime.
President Barrack Obama has stated to the American people and to Congress that the Syrian Army was responsible without a doubt. SECSTATE John Kerry has asserted this position to Congress, and the American people publically. On August 26, 2013, the Guardian published Kerry’s full statement transcript. (See below under more information)
In a town hall conducted by Senator Mark Begich (D-AK) on September 6, 2013, Sen. Begich defended President Obama and SECSTATE Kerry’s assertions regarding the source of the attack. He maintained that Pres. Bashar al-Assad had ordered the used of chemical weapons against his own people. He would not reveal his sources, other than saying that he had been brief on the use of the weapons and that it was the Syrian Army that had used them.
Yet, more evidence is being revealed that the two gas attacks in Syria on civilians were both undertaken by rebel forces. Saudi involvement is now more fully known. It is suspected that those countries are Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and possibly Turkey.
Prince Bandar bin Sultan is the head of the Saudi Intelligence Agency on 19 July, 2012. He is purported to be the driving force behind the Syrian rebellion. He is referred to by the Syrian rebels as al-Habib, the ‘lover’. The rebels believe that bin Sultan has the clout (wasta–under teh table clout) to get the arms and supplies the rebels need. Bin Sultan has worked with Jordan to set up staging bases and airstrips to support logistics and training.
On August 25th, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported that the authorization by the Saudi government for bin Sultan to support the Syrian rebellion against Assad demonstrated the commitment by the Sauds to topple the Assad regime in order to cripple Iran’s attempt to gain influence in the Middle East.
On August 27, 2013, Geoffry Ingersoll, Business Insider, reported that Bin Sultan has had frank discussions with the Russians regarding the rebellion. Sultan has promised the Russians $400 million in cheap oil if they will not aid the Assad regime against the rebels. Sultan is further purported to have threatened the Russians with Chechen attacks against the Sochi Olympic Winter Games should the Russians attempt to support the Assad regime claiming that the Saudis control the Chechen rebels. Sultan has further promised the Russians no harm to their naval base at Tartus on the coast of Syria if they agree to stand aside and act neutral in the Syrian rebellion.
September 8, 2013, Michael Aloof, WND, reported that Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS) has sent a memorandum to President Barrack Obama claiming that the gas attacks were accomplished by Syrian rebels and not by the Syrian military. VIPS is comprised of current and former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), State Department Intelligence Bureau (INR), and the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) personnel. They are also saying that the President was not informed of this information by his intelligence sources to preserve “plausible deniability” for the President. The VIPS also opined that the Israels are no unhappy with the Syrian conflict, or with the idea of U.S. or NATO intervention as such would draw out the conflict and keep the Shiites and Sunnis, including Iran, occupied and unable to undertake any operations against Israel.
On September 8, 2013, Simon Tisdall and Josie Le blond reported in Guardian that the German publican Bild am Sonntag is citing German intelligence sources as saying President Bashar al-Assad did not order the gas attacks. Assad’s innocence was based upon intercepted phone calls. However, the intelligence gleaned by the German Navy seems to indicate the involvement of some of Assad’s military acting independently. The question that rises is whether or not those officers are turncoats acting as double agents for the rebels? The German Navy has an intelligence gathering ship off the coast of Syria as part of NATO forces arrayed off the coast of Syria.
What has not been discussed by Congress or the President publically is what happens if the Russians to to act passively to any cruise missile strike or air strike by U.S. naval aircraft? What happens if cruise missiles or U.S. strike aircraft are shot down by the Russian naval ships at the Russian naval base at Tartus, Syria?
On June 22, 2012, a Turkish Air Force F4 Phantom was shot down off the coast of Syria by the Syrians using the Russian Tor S300 air defense system. Leaked documents show that the Russians at Tartus recommended executing the two Turkish crew of the F4, who both bailed out and survived the shoot down. Both pilots were later reported to have been killed in the shoot down. Apparently, it was initially believed by the Russians and Syrians that the aircraft was an Israeli F4.
The called for American military attack on the Syrian forces is dangerous on several levels. The 900 pound gorilla in the room is whether or not Russian Pres. Putin will test Obama by ordering his forces to “act in self-defense” against any aerial attack on Syria.
