August 12, 2010. In reaction to the Students for Life of America (SFLA) campaign, the UNC System today announced it will allow students opposed to abortion to "opt-out" of paying for abortion coverage in their university health insurance plan.
But Kristan Hawkins, SFLA's executive, is cautious about calling it a win:
“The announcement by the UNC System shows the impact grassroots activism can have in effecting national case. However, it is not a victory. The UNC System is still considering abortion to be heath care. Abortion is not health care neither for the preborn child or his mother. Abortion should be removed from the UNC System completely."
Hawkins also explained how candidates willing to pay for the coverage have an advantage in qualifying for student aid:
"Student eligibility for federal grants is determined by the difference in the student’s ability to pay and the total “cost of attendance” for the school. This amount equals the student’s eligibility for federal funds. As stated by the UNC System, the cost of their abortion health care plan, if the student chooses to keep abortion in their plan, is added to the student’s “cost of attendance” calculation. This in turn, increases the student’s need for federal funds. Because of this increase in need, additional federal funds could be directed to the student to help cover this increase in cost."
According to Hawkins, this amounts to the use of federal taxpayer money to fund abortion health care.
Question is: how soon will SFLA efforts take root here in California?
NOTE: The North Carolina Board of Governors requires all students enrolled in a University of North Carolina public institution for the 2010-2011 school year to have health insurance.
Students without private health insurance are required to buy a state selected policy from Pearce & Pearce, Inc -- that covers up to $500 toward elective abortions and has 80% PPO coverage for elective abortions.

Comments
The UNC mishandling of the health insurance issue is typical of the fanaticism and intolerance of liberals who hold positions of power. Liberalism proclaims itself to be "tolerant" and "open-minded" on all issues EXCEPT FOR THOSE ISSUES WITH WHICH THEY DISAGREE. In this instance, UNC liberal elitists, who blithely proclaim themselves "pro-choice" adopted the typical progressive stance, i.e. pro-choice for US and NO CHOICE FOR YOU OR THE UNBORN PERSON.
