Did Michael Jackson become a Christian right before he died?

Was Michael Jackson a Christian?

Rumors are flying that pop superstar Michael Jackson became a Christian the day or week before he died on June 25.  The most often repeated story claims that gospel music artist Andraé Crouch led Michael to accept Christ right before Michael Jackson died. I have received a couple of emails voicing this claim as well as a press release condemning Michael Jackson to a fiery hell. Readers will be relieved to know I plan to go down neither path.

In the article Michael Jackson's gospel music ties, I have already discussed how Michael seemed to reinvent his faith as often as he did his music and his appearance. Here are some of the facts about Michael Jackson's spiritual journey.

Michael Jackson's spiritual roots

Michael Jackson grew up in the Jehovah's Witnesses. He left the Jehovah's Witnesses In 1987 in response to their disapproval of the "Thriller" video. During his 2005 trial Michael Jackson apparently turned to Kaballah (made popular by Madonna), indicated by the red string bracelet favored by Kaballah followers which he wore throughout the trial. During his life, Michael Jackson sought out several high profile spiritual advisers including  Orthodox Jew Rabbi Shmuley Boteach and New Age guru Deepak Chopra. Chopra was seen on many television interviews following Michael's death. Michael Jackson also followed several of his brothers into Islam. (Liveprayer.com) Michael Jackson was clearly a man searching for something to believe in.

Michael Jackson prays with Andraé Crouch

Referring again to Michael Jackson's gospel music ties, I mentioned the relationship between Michael Jackson and gospel artist Andraé Crouch. To find out more about that last visit between Andraé Crouch and Michael Jackson, I visited the Facebook page of Andraé Crouch.  Here is some of what has been posted by the admin and Andraé Crouch's spokesperson:

"He (Michael Jackson) definitely had an 'encounter' with them (Andrae' Crouch and his sister Sandra Crouch), Andraé says, 'he did NOT reject Jesus or the prayer when they prayed, and gladly joined in prayer.' He usually doesn’t touch anybody, but he touched them, and held their hands in a circle as they sang and prayed... There was NO actual 'sinners prayer' however, but they did talk and pray about Jesus and the anointing of the Holy Spirit" (the "anointing" was requested by Michael for his music).

However, the rumors persisted and became so widespread that Andraé Crouch;s spokesperson fianlly posted this note on Andraés Facebook page:

The Crouches did NOT lead Michael Jackson to the Lord, They DID pray with him, but NOT a prayer of "salvation". It is a rumor that they "led him to Christ". Please spread the "truth" as quickly as the rumor has spread.

Sandra Crouch addresses Michael Jackson rumors

Andrae's sister, Sandra, Crouch addressed the rumors about meeting Michael Jackson with brother Andraé on her own Facebook page saying, "It has been brought to my attention that several media outlets have been erroneously reporting that my brother, Andrae Crouch and me met our dear friend Michael Jackson several weeks prior to his death so he could accept Christ. This is incorrect and absolutely not true."

Sandra stated she and Andraé met with Michael recently to discuss recording two songs with their choir for his newest project. "Michael always had a respect and curiosity for spiritual things. During our meeting, not unlike many other creative/music meetings we've had with him the past, we sang together, prayed together and had a wonderful time."

Another gospel artist, David Pack, shared some of his personal experience and witness to Michael Jackson in 1986 at: Michael Jackson, Jesus, and Me.

Michael Jackson is in God's hands

None of us know what was in Michael's heart when he died, and none of us should try to take on the mantle of God Almighty and act as Michael's judge. We can examine the fruits of his life, both good and bad, but it is not up to us to place Michael Jackson in heaven or hell, no matter what we thought of him. Michael Jackson is in God's hands now.

Amen to that!! And every Christian, Jew, Muslim, Jehovah Witness, etc should beseech their Master to treat Micahael Jackson with the mercy and grace we all need. We are all sinners! Praise God for forgiveness!

I believe this as truth. I have had a peace about Michael when I heard about his death. He is experiencing the perfect peace he thought he missed out on during his childhood.

I hope for his sake, he did ask Jesus into his heart. When I see that famous (or infamous) people have died, I do often wonder about their eternity and hope that in their last minutes, they accepted Christ.

Three weeks ago a burden to pray for Michael Jackson was placed in my heart. I told several people about this and ask them to pray for him as well. They ask was anything wrong and I said I don't know just pray for him. God is a merciful God, and no one, has the right to judge God's mercy. All I have to say is remember the thief on the cross, and what Jesus said to a dying thief. God is Love and only he knows the heart of a man, after all is God.

Ironically, a couple of days before Michael died, God told me to pray for Michael's salvation. Me being a Christian and a big fan of his, i stopped where i was and prayed that he would find God. When i found out he had passed away, i cried, but then i had a feeling that he went to heaven, and this just confirmed it, im so glad to hear this good news!

  • Az 2 years ago

i really hope he gets to heaven, forget the celebrity rubbish and riches, cos he actually cared and helped people, and love in his heart,he was obviously searching for something real,i just hope he found it,cos despite all the earthly things he had,he was lonely, sad most of his life, and having the dad he had did'nt help him at all,it been tearing me up inside since thursday, not cos i won't get to a concert or hear a new song but because i want him to get the peace real joy,he never had on earth in heaven.I not a big fans who know every song, and i won't go crazy if i saw him..but i really care about the most important thing concerning him....his soul.I pray for the mercy of God on his soul. All i can do i hope when the lord comes back(soon)that i go and that i see that i see him up there in the house of the Lord.my heart is broken at the moment, and really pray and will continue to have faith he made it,even if no one in the world knows it. RIP mike

i have not prayed for him but I was curious as to where he would be and I cried because i said Lord he really was a man-child and I would like to think that he is in God's arm for he search for that inner peace with the various teachers. My quest now is to pray for his children that is a real burden on my soul and I can say to all I am scared. I keep getting this prompt to prayer for his children and this is going to sound even weird to all is as if he is saying to me to pray for his children. I am not a fan have never been but somehow I am getting this tug.

Two days before Michael Jackson died God spoke to me and said "He is Forgiven" I did not know who God was speaking about. When I saw it come across the TV that he had died I then knew who God had been speaking about, Michael Jackson. It took me a while to confirm the story with the Crouch's but it finally came out. I prayed that a Christian Minister would do his funeral, that has come to pass. The Internet news say it will not be the Nation Of Islam, or the Jehovah Witness, or any other religion than Christian. I am not a Pop Rock Music Fan but I have to say that Michael had talent few people have ever been blessed with. I ask that everyone pray that Michael's Memorial Service in some way will Glorify Jesus Christ. For those that put him in hell that is NOT your right or your job. Only God can do that and Michael is in the hands of God. Pray for his three children and his family, please do not throw darts.

  • A Child of the King 2 years ago

I too had been praying to God on Michael's behalf and just stumbled across this site. This was not by accident...God wanted me to know today, that Michael is with Him. We serve such a wonderful and loving God that he heard our prayers and cries and wanted to bring comfort to those who loved Michael. I'm at peace now in knowing he's with my Lord and Savior. Please continue to keep his family and children in your prayers.

Michael Jackson is indeed in heaven! Praise God! I knew that Jesus took him right after he received Jesus in his life because of the troubles of this world. It really upsets me that the fake spiritual leader Rabbi Schmuley Boteach speak ill of Michael. Schmuley is not a Christian and selling "God" as his marketing tool. He thinks he is a spiritualleader but he isnt, only Christ is true and he wanted Michael in his arms... Satan couldnt get Michael's soul... I'm very happy and will continue to praise Jesus is all his glory and for who He is "the Son of God"...

I watched it live on the internet and thought his prayers were beautiful. When they were not televised i was furious the media had taken away the opportunity for the Lord to touch their hearts.Everything was shown except the prayers!!! please share your experience and thoughts.

I am a Believer, but I was also a fan of Michael. (I believe you can be both.) I had been praying for his salvation since I was about 8 years old. I even wrote him a letter about it, but I never sent it. Needless to say, when I heard the news that he had died, I was inconsolable. For some reason I felt as if I had lost a member of my family. When I saw the article saying the Crouch's didn't lead him to Christ, but DID pray with him and DID tell him about the Holy Spirit, I just had a feeling that he DID become a Believer. Michael gave so much to so many who didn't have anything. And, while I know that just being a good person and doing good deeds is not enough to get you to Heaven, I sincerely feel that he is with the Father now.

The night I heard about Heath Ledger, I had a bad dream about him...like he was suffering and all...when it was M.J., I didn't dream the same...He said during his 2005 trial that he was reading the Bible and reading about Jesus and how much He loved children...reading the comments above about how guys found peace about it makes me feeling better that he accepted Christ into his life before passing on...may be this was his perfect moment to pass on: when he accepted Christ...I'll be so sad if MJ doesn't go to heaven...he is a typical citizen of up there...

I believe Michael is in God's hands now because as a young fellow he learned about God and Jesus in JW. The only thing he didn't learn about is the Holy Spirit which he was learning about when he talked to the Crouch's. I believe he probably might have been saved as a young lad. We can pray he was saved and Believe and have Faith that he was.

  • Monique 2 years ago

I have not been crying for the past 3 weeks not only because of his death, but because of his salvation. He was such a wonderful person. I think he was one of the most "Christ-like" person. His heart was so pure and he lived in a world where such innocence was strange and unacceptable. How could someone cope with so much pain and suffering? He couldn't. And I pray everyday for Michael, that he's with God. And even though it's too late, I still pray that his heart was in the right place. I pray that it wasn't a coincidence that he found God (if he did) not long before his death. I pray that that was a sign from God. I think God knew the hurt inside, and just couldn't bare seeing Michael like that. Maybe Michael accomplished what God set him out to do. I still pray everyday that God would send me a sign, to let me know that Michael is safe in Heaven. And I find it comforting to read comments on websites like these.

Thank you for your rational approach. That's what I said. Not all death bed confessions are fake. Christians are here to witness and warn before people die. Once they die, they are in God's hands. Even an old man can be born again. Who knows, huh? Jesus Christ knows, that's who.

    come unto me

    come unto me

i believe michael accepted the lord but not necessarily when he prayed with the crouches, i mean there was no "sinners prayer" there does not have to be specific prayer, the fact he held their hands and gave thanks to almighty god and asked for the anointing of the holy spirit upon him and his music speaks for itself. The lord was in his heart and yes for a time he did stray, but he never once forgot to mention the lord in interviews or events. Perhaps it took his death for him too, to open his heart to jesus and fully accept him, i mean it all becomes so very real when you die well this is what i hear anyway and even in the final moments i believe one has the choice and i pray michael made that choice and called out to Jesus, who he did aim to be like on earth with children.
    Amen

  • juliette 2 years ago

isnt it amazing how that happened one week before michael died? he prayed with Andre and his sister, while not the actual sinners prayer, i believe something was left inside of him that day, the holy spirit, and then the lord took him the next week
people do not want to see this, and i admit the crouch's facebook page says they did NOT pray that "sinners prayer" they did say that michael touched their hands and sang gospel prayers and asked for an anointing

so maybe just maybe that week before he died, the crouch's were with him for a reason, god sees all doesn't he?

  • Kenya 2 years ago

In my opinion Michael Jackson has always been intrested in Christ. YOu could see this in his music in songs such as "Will you be there" and "Man in the mirror." I believe God put Michael on the earth to show that one man can change the world. He contributed lots of money to charities and hospitals. I jus t hope he was sincere in his wanting to get to know God. but after reading all of these comments it starting to become more apparent that he was.

  • The Truth 2 years ago

Michael Jackson was NOT a Muslim! It amazes me how people fail to do proper research. When Michael was alive he denounced these rumors through his lawyer Londell McMillan.

He actually released a statement of denial! This rumor has also been refuted by many in the Muslim community as well.

Please let’s get our facts straight.

Please report the whole truth! It does no one any good to consistently report lies and falsehoods. We all have the power to stop rumors and lies in their tracks by not repeating them. Let’s do that!

That being said I believe that Michael accepted Christ and is at peace in Heaven with the Lord. While it is a shameful thing that the Crouch’s didn’t heed the Great CCommission and actually lead Michael to Christ themselves, I believe that he did indeed accept Christ into his heart and is at peace now. The fact that Michael was asking about the Holy Spirit, and prayed to receive Him, and be filled by Him says a lot. JW’s don’t believe in the Holy Spirit

  • The Truth 2 years ago

Muslims don’t believe in the Holy Spirit. Kaballists don’t believe in the Holy Spirit! I believe that in prayer though it wasn’t specifically a sinner’s prayer, was a saving/salvation prayer for Michael. If he was following any other religion other than Christianity or considering following something else, he would not have prayed to receive the Holy Spirit! That’s common sense! I believe that when we as believers in Christ get to heaven we will see him there. Everything happens for a reason. God brought Michael to Himself only a few weeks before he died. That’s amazing. Isn’t God good? He’s on time all of the time!

So, let’s pray for his family that is still here and living in darkness, especially the children that are now being reared at Jehovah’s Witnesses, so that they may one day experience the peace and joy Michael has now found.

Update, Nov. 21, 2008: Michael Jackson confirms conversion to Islam

Pop superstar Michael Jackson has confirmed his conversion to Islam, according to reports in the Middle East.

The Arab-Israeli newspaper Panorama claims Jackson has announced the move and revealed plans to move to Bahrain, where he has purchased property.

The singer’s Muslim brother Jermaine Friday claimed the “Thriller” hitmaker had taken interest in the religion since Jermaine converted in 1989, and had been considering converting following his acquittal on child abuse charges in 2005.

Jermaine said, “When I came back from Mecca I got him a lot of books and he asked me lots of things about my religion and I told him that it’s peaceful and beautiful.

“He read everything and he was proud of me that I found something that would give me inner strength and peace..."

Pop superstar Michael Jackson has sparked further speculation he is on the verge of converting to Islam, after pledging to erect a mosque in his adopted home of Bahrain.

The Thriller hitmaker has won planning permission to construct a 30-metre (98-foot) building just outside Manama on land adjoining the palace of the Bahraini royal family.

The former Jehovah’s Witness has been living in the Middle Eastern nation since he was acquitted of child molestation charges in his native America last June (05). He was recently pilloried for appearing in a Muslim abaya robe, which is traditionally worn by females.

“Michael is looking to give something back to the country that has welcomed him so openly,” Jackson’s spokeswoman Ramone Bain was quoted by Contactnusic, as saying.

“Thousands of people are embracing Islam, Michael is just one of them,” Discover Islam spokesman Aman Khalib added.

Michael Jackson 'converts to Islam and changes name to Mikaeel'

The singer, who was raised as a Jehovah's Witness, converted to Islam in a ceremony at a friend's house in Los Angeles.

He is said to have sat on the floor and worn a small hat while an imam officiated.
According to The Sun, the ceremony took place while Jackson, 50, was recording an album at the home of Steve Porcaro, a keyboard player who composed music on his Thriller album.

The former Jackson 5 star was counselled by David Wharnsby, a Canadian songwriter, and Phillip Bubal, a producer, who have both converted.

A source said Jackson had appeared a "bit down" and added: "They began talking to him about their beliefs, and how they thought they had become better people after they converted. Michael soon began warming to the idea.

"An imam was summoned from the mosque and Michael went through the shahada, which is the Muslim declaration of belief."

He might have rested his head on June 24th saying "I will think about God tomorrow", and may be his last thought was "Jesus, I love You my Lord"...no one would know for sure...however, my only comfort is that I know Jesus is faithful to look for His kids...Michael has been reaching out to God all his life and trying to be "God-like" as he used to say...it just doesn't make sense to me that Jesus wouldn't reach out for him in return when His kids' souls are most precious...THAT thought gives me great comfort...
also, his death was peaceful, which is something that doesn't happen if you are heading to hell...having everything in order in your life before you die is a great sign of how your ending will be like...

Please let's pray for his family and fans all over the world...may they follow the role of MJ and be as self fulfilling as he was...as unique as he was...as CONSCIOUSLY-DELIBERATLY- pure as he was...he had a terrible life, and he made it...

Bella, dear, we are not condemning anyone...all of us want MJ to have joined their religion cuz we all love him so much...it makes sense everyone is trying to "snatch" him into their religion...and MJ taught us all to accept and LOVE each other regardless of the differences...you might find people who condemn Islam, but they won't be us: MJ fans ;) [I am a Christian Egyptian...most of my best friends are Muslims and I LOVE them...I'm true to what I am saying regarding accepting the differences :D]...

The rumors about Michael being Muslim aren't true.
If he did change his name to Mikaeel, why didn't the name appear on Thriller 25 or on posters for This Is It?

Also, look on any of Michael's albums. He thanks The Creator, God, for letting him be able to release his album.
He also says he believes in the higher source, God, in interviews all of the time.

I think even though he quit his religion in '87, he kept most of his Christian beliefs since he always thanked God in anyhing he did.
Also, he said he cried after his first Christmas and Birthday because he said he felt he shouldn't have done those things. (this was in '92 or '93)

He kept most of his Jehovah Witness beliefs afterward except for celebrations like Christmas, Easter, and birthdays.

LIGHT is A PARTICLE but LIGHT is a WAVE. The most highly educated physicists on Earth tell us this is a fact. LIGHT has more than one true expression. So why must we try to PUT GOD IN A BOX AND SAY THERE IS ONLY ONE CORRECT WAY TO WORSHIP GOD. WE SEE THROUGH A GLASS DARKLY. How do we know, as mere mortal human beings, that we have PERFECT UNDERSTANDING. The more we argue and fight over who is the true representative of God, and which is the "Only True Religion" --- THE MORE PAIN WE BRING INTO THE WORLD -- NOT LOVE -- PAIN. WE HURT OUR HUMAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS. DOES THIS MAKE ALMIGHTY GOD HAPPY??? IF GO IS PEACE, AND LOVE, AND LIGHT, AND "ONE" AND COMPASSIONATE, AND THE CAUSE OF ALL LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE --- DON'T YOU THINK GOD MIGHT BE BIG ENOUGH TO HAVE MORE THAN ONE MESSENGER TO EARTH. AFTER ALL, GOD HAS A LOT OF STARS, AND STAR SYSTEMS, AND PLANETS. DO WE GO AROUND SAYING THE EARTH IS THE ONLY TRUE PLANET THAT GOD CARES ABOUT? HOW WOULD WE KNOW THAT?

Michael Jackson was a christian! He shared with David Pack that
he was leaving the music industry and pursuing full time christian ministry! MJ is with his Lord and Savior! He is in heaven (not hell) because he allowed Jesus to save his soul from
eternal destruction! Jesus died on the cross of calvary because
only His (Jesus) blood could redeem humanity from a certain hell!
Michael was WISE and received this forgiveness and is now safe in
the arms of the SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST and MJ will live forever in
eternal bliss with some of the greatest rewards God can give because MJ was unselfish and hepled more people than anyone in history! MJ was a STAR on earth in more ways than one and he is
now one of the brighest STARS in heaven! According to the bible
he is no longer suffering, has a healthy body and mind and is
perfect with our PERFECT HEAVENLY FATHER! I love how MJ says,
"God bless you" several times throughout the "This is it" movie!
    Thank you! Mattie Ramos
