Did Hebrew National Hot Dogs Just Answer To A Higher Power? History of Kosher Food in America

Who is the Higher Power?  Uncle Sam?  God?  ConAgra? YouTube?

If Not Now, When?  And If I Am Not For Myself Then Who Am I For?

Hebrew National Foods began in New York, when Isadore Pinkowitz started producing kosher frankfurters. His son Leonard Pines will took over the business after Pinkowitz's death in 1936.   The enterprise will grew to have a line that includes salami, sauerkraut, mustard, and other kosher products.

Here in Pittsburgh, the Hebrew National Delicatessen changed ownership a number of times.

You could enjoy a delicous truly Kosher meal there at one time.  The old time booths remain in the same Squirrel Hill location today, although the restaurant is no longer Kosher.

It does serve some kosher-style food (not in keeping with Jewish dietary laws).

But the crowds and long lines of fressers and kibutzers are gone.

The Gantseh Megillah (This and That) has a wonderful timeline of the history of kosher foods.

Before corporate conglomerates, hotdog vendors just like the one in the old black and white photo sold mouthwatering wieners.  Photograper Arthur Rothstein captured the Kosher Hot dog vendor on Lower Broadway in New York City and I found the picture  in the digital archives at the Library of Congress Prints and Photographs Online Catalog.

Today the Hebrew National is owned by ConAgra Foods.  The history of the various owners of Hebrew National Hotdogs can be fo found on The Hebrew National Story webpage.

The "We answer to a higher authority" ad campaign is almost a household slogan.  However many Orthodox Jews do not consider the product to be Glatt Kosher.

Since Orthodox Jews do not consider the product Glatt Kosher you may be wondering just who is that higher authority?

Have they just spoken by way of yesterday's explosion which has already claimed 3 lives in the Garner, NC. plant.

Immediately preceeding  the "Hot Dog War" on Memorial Day Weekend 2009, Gary Rodkin, ConAgra Foods CEO said,  "Hebrew National is made with premium cuts of 100 percent kosher beef - there are no by-products, no fillers, and no artificial flavors or colors. Hebrew National has an award-winning taste that the whole family will love, and we believe the American public will agree."

It is important to thoroughly investigate the cause of this explosion.  Did someone find the Hebrew National Hot Dogs Un-American?
