Did Floyd Mayweather Jr. steal Miguel Cotto from Top Rank

Undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. seemed to pull the rug out from underneath Top Rank Promotions last week when he announced that he will be fighting super welterweight champion Miguel Cotto on Saturday May 5th. According to a Monday February 6th report by ESPN.com, Cotto was in the running for a rematch with Manny Pacquiao before signing a contract to take on Mayweather Jr.

There are some pundits who believe that the fight with Manny didn't go through because Cotto had just split with Top Rank and was a free agent. Therefore, preventing Bob Arum from getting a piece of the financial pie that he normally took when Cotto was under contract. It also appears that the two sides couldn't agree on a catch-weight.

Additionally, reports have recently come out that Mayweather Jr.'s financial demands were the undoing of a mega-fight with Manny on May 5th. Apparently, Floyd didn't approve of Top Rank's purse split. So, one would have to argue that Floyd got even with Top Rank by stealing Cotto from Top Rank's pool of potential opponents.

Miguel Cotto poised for success against 'Money May'

The fight between Floyd and Cotto is a solid bout that will pit two top fighters. However, Floyd is the clear cut favorite in this fight and his counter punching is expected to be the difference maker in their May 5th bout, which takes place live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. Mayweather fans are calling this the best fight out there other than Floyd vs. Manny. I think their enthusiasm is a bit misguided as Sergio Martinez would be a better opponent for Floyd and is a better fighter than Cotto right now in their respective careers.
