A few weeks ago, Floyd Mayweather Jr. shook up the boxing world by calling The PacMan directly on the phone and offering the fighting Congressman a boatload of money but no PPV revenue. Floyd offered $40 million but wanted to keep the PPV money. The fight would have broken all PPV records, gate records, and revenue records of any kind. Manny rejected the offer and Floyd decided to fight Miguel Cotto instead. Floyd's position on the dollars and cents caused many critics to believe that Mayweather really didn't want the fight. According to a February 21st report by Yahoo! Sports, Manny made the following comments:
“He talks, he says all this, but you know what: He doesn’t want the fight. I want the fight. I’m the one who has wanted this fight all along. He offered me $40 million, and no pay-per-view [money],”
Pacquiao would go on to make a great point that if Floyd was offered 40 to 50 million without any PPV revenue then he wouldn't take the offer. It's a great point because everyone knows that this PPV would bring in hundreds of millions of dollars.
Pacquiao has been a solid PPV draw with comparable numbers to Floyd over the last few years. He's worthy of a piece of the PPV pie. Once Manny said no, Floyd almost immediately accepted a fight with Miguel Cotto. The speed of which that fight came about had many pundits questioning Floyd's sincerity in wanting to fight Manny. Until both fighters step into the ring, and the bell sounds, then I will not believe this fight will happen. It's been nearly 2 1/2 years of games and excuses.
