Van Dyke, 87, was headed eastbound around 2 p.m. Monday afternoon when somehow his car started on fire. Reports indicated that he was slumped over the wheel, but TMZ spoke with Mr. Van Dyke at the scene and he shared additional details.
Dick Van Dyke said that he hadn't passed out in the car. Rather, he was leaning over his cell phone trying to call 911 when a passerby yanked him out of the car to safety. A man named Jason Pennington was headed past the incident and stopped to help when he saw a car full of smoke on the side of the road. Several others stopped to help as well.
Luckily Van Dyke did not need medical attention, and his wife came to pick him up. TMZ has video of their brief chat with Dick, as well as of the Jaguar that is completely totaled. Dick says he got out before the flames really tore through the vehicle, and it's a good thing he did. The car ended up completely engulfed in flames and this story could have had a very different ending had Van Dyke not gotten out quickly. In fact, the car ended up exploding and is now completely charred.
So far there is no word on what caused Dick Van Dyke's Jaguar to catch on fire. Despite the frightening encounter, Van Dyke was still cracking jokes with the TMZ photographer during the brief chat.
