Dr. Mehmet Oz frequently invites celebrities to his talk show to dish on topics ranging from body after baby (Snooki) to waistlines (Wendy Williams). On his October 23 show, Dr. Oz talked with former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney about his battle with heart disease. Learn what the former Vice President said about the road to recovery after a life-changing heart transplant. In addition, discover what Dr. Oz says about heart-healthy diets.
Although Cheney admits that he's struggled with stress and the physical problems involved with a life-changing heart transplant, he also showed his sense of humor.
"I just went through a competition in Wyoming called the One Shot Antelope Contest. Every year it's held in conjunction with the tribe, the Shoshone tribe there in Central Wyoming and they have a ceremony where they give each hunter a name, an Indian name. And my Indian name was Two Heart. This was just a couple of months ago when we had that competition and that might not be a bad epitaph for my headstone. Two Heart," chuckled Cheney.
To share his experiences, Cheney has authored a book: "Heart: An American Medical Odyssey" (click for details). Included is a physician's perspective on Cheney's case as well as an exploration of the history of heart disease research.
But beyond the type of medicine and interventions that a physician can offer, Dr. Oz has repeatedly emphasized on his show the role that a heart-healthy diet plays. For example, he invited Rosie O'Donnell on his show after her heart attack to discuss her own weight loss plan: Learn more by clicking here.
"Clogged arteries can force your heart to work harder than it should, causing a multitude of health problems," warns Dr. Oz.
