Not only can Diatomaceous Earth be used to combat internal parasites, but you can also use it to help control and prevent fleas from infesting your German Shepherd Dog and house.
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a light fine white powder that consists of crushed up fossils and shells. It works by slicing the exoskeleton of the fleas, dehydrating them and causing death.
You can sprinkle the DE on your carpet and flooring, in the corners or cracks, or anywhere else that fleas may hide. After letting it sit for awhile, you simply vacuum it up. The fleas crawl through the DE powder and carry it to the other fleas. Any flea that comes into contact with it will die.
Depending on the type of carpet you have, you may want to work the DE down into the carpet a bit before vacuuming. You want to make sure the fleas will come into contact with the powder.
It may be a good idea to sprinkle it on any dog bedding or blankets that your dog may lay on as well.
You can also apply the DE directly on your dog’s skin and coat. There are a few precautions that should be taken when using or handling DE. Because of the properties of DE and how it works, it can irritate some people or dog’s lungs. It should not be inhaled by either you or your dog. So if you are applying it to your dog’s body, be sure that you are careful as it can cause a dust cloud. It may be best to apply outside so that the dust cloud does not happen in your house. Also, if you apply too much it may dry the dog's skin out, so do not apply too much or too often.
