Diana Ross Reigns Supreme
On Tuesday night, Diana Ross entered the stage of the Mahaffey Theater with her famous opening song, I’m Coming Out and the audience could not hold back the enthusiasm and excitement of beholding their eyes on this legend.
The combination of the intimate setting of the Mahaffey Theater and a legend as illusive as Diana Ross, in such close proximity, was overwhelming and unbelievable. First, she was actually performing live before their very eyes in 2013 – amazing to still see her in motion at 69 – and second that she was almost within touching reach, instead of a stadium stage that separates the artist from the audience as though they are two divided entities. She was right there exchanging an unforgettable performance of excellence in lieu of their presence.
The costume changes were classic Miss Ross. There was the red opening dress with the wedding gown train, the white peacock overcoat and the sexiest shimmering black skin tight, opened sides dress that showed of her unchanged, trademarked slender physique.
As she performed hit after hit from the various eras of music that she had remained present and along with hits of the Supremes, the audience sang and dance and some were even crying. One lady laughed, “I told my husband if he didn’t bring me tonight, I wanted a divorce.” With such a rich history of work, she let the music speak most of the night, limiting her dialogue with the audience but when she spoke it was still that sweet soprano voice known to her melodic and harmonic signature.
The Mahaffey Theatre should also be applauded for bringing this type of invaluable artistic experience to the community – and they do this continually through various productions. The combination of the warmth of the theater, the 70’s after party with DJ Fresh with the Bay as the backdrop, and having the experience of Miss Diana Ross live in concert was a night that those in attendance will never, ever forget. September 10th, 2013: the night Diana Ross reigned supreme at the Mahaffey Theater (St. Petersburg, Florida).
