Diana Cosby is a Texas writer with an expertise in the medieval period, and her novels reveal her expertise. Hi, Diana, and welcome back to The Examiner. Do you consider yourself a romantic or just a darned imaginative writer?
A bit of both. I love all of the elements of romance, the looks, special smiles, the extra details that someone who cares for you will do.
How many books did you write before selling your first one, and how did you deal with rejection?
I was working on book #11 when I sold book #8.
Wow. Talk about determined. Did you have an agent for that first sale? If not, do you have one now and has it made it easier to sell your work?
No. I sold my first two books on my own. I have an agent now, Holly Root with Waxman Literary Agency, who is amazing! Holly's knowledge of editors’ preferences allows her to target my Scottish medieval romantic suspense novels to editors who prefer this type of read. Since I signed with my agent, Holly has sold two more novels. :)
Congratulations! Please tell us about your latest book.
The second book in the MacGruder brother’s series is HIS WOMAN.
Lady Isabel Adair is the last woman Sir Duncan MacGruder wants to see again, much less be obliged to save. Three years ago, Isabel broke their engagement to become the Earl of Frasyer's mistress, shattering Duncan’s heart and hopes in one painful blow. But Duncan’s promise to Isabel's dying brother compels him to rescue her from those determined to bring down Scottish rebel Sir William Wallace.
Sounds exciting. Where did you get the idea for that story?
I love deathbed promise stories as the hero and/or heroine would never do the task otherwise. This promise propels the characters into mayhem, plot-wise as emotionally. So, with Duncan, I knew that he despised Isabel. Never in a million years would he ever want to see her. But I knew her secret, one she hid from Duncan. So, it occurred to me that I could use a deathbed promise.
How did you decide on the personality for your heroine?
For the sacrifice Isabel has made for Duncan, I knew she had to be a strong woman. The rest of who she is came as I wrote HIS WOMAN.
Most of us don't run into villainous people in our real lives. What are some characteristics that make a believable villain in fiction?
To me, the villain never thinks of themselves as such. To them, they have a goal to achieve, and they're willing to do whatever it takes to achieve it. I believe the most terrifying villains are those who could be anyone we know.
That’s probably true…and disturbing. Out of all the characters you've created, which one would you most like to know in real life?
Wow, tough to answer after I'm finishing up my 13th novel. Each character holds unique traits. No one completely steals my heart. They each own a piece. :)
What is your latest writing news?
My third story in the MacGruder brothers series, "HIS CONQUEST will be released in November! Book #4, HIS DESTINY, comes out November 2010!
