Nearly 17 years since her death, images and memories of Princess Diana still resonate strongly with many people. Cincinnati is fortunate to be the final stop on the 11 year tour of objects, images and clothing (including her Royal Wedding Gown from 1981) that celebrate her life, work and legacy.
This award-winning exhibition Diana, A Celebration, lovingly chronicles the life of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, will be at Cincinnati Museum Center through August 17th.
Over 150 objects are on view, on loan from the Althorp Estate, including personal mementos, paintings, rare home movies and family photos. From her childhood at the Spencer family’s 500-year-old ancestral home, to her untimely passing, this is an excellent opportunity to explore her life and impact.
On a recent visit, I observed mothers and daughters en masse walking through the gently lit exhibit that begins by telling the story of other Spencer women and displaying stunning pieces of jewelry, including tiaras. Moving forward into the exhibit, you get to see her very personal items, toys, clothes, even report cards and it’s a reminder that she was a girl with hopes and dreams like any other girl.
The gown from her wedding remains stunning to me. I had to look at it several times. In its large case, you can see the full length of the train, the workmanship, the gaiety of the design. It takes me back to waking up so very early to watch the wedding live, long before the days of instant news and endless recaps.
Upon her marriage to HRH Prince Charles, she took on many other duties: motherhood, volunteering, and speaking on behalf of those who don’t always have a voice-to name a few. You can gain a great sense of her personal passions in her correspondence and the images of her at work. You can see in candid photos that motherhood was clearly a great joy to her and you can mourn the loss of that, even though you did not know her. Upon leaving this exhibit, you will feel like you did.
