For its 53rd season opener, Diablo Theatre Company has chosen an ambitious undertaking — The Wizard of Oz. This reporter’s first Oz memory was of hiding behind my parent’s bed when the flying monkeys appeared in the annual telecast.
Diablo’s creative team knows a challenge when they see it, and they have met it head on. This will be their biggest production ever:
- 56 performers
- A multi-generational cast
- New musical interpretations of classic material
“Until now [Oz] has not been known as a dance show,” explained Daren Corollo. To “turn some heads,” Diablo has teamed with a hip-hop dance company to interpret the beloved Oz fantasy in a way that’s “showier, flashier and bigger,” according to Cara Young of FUNKMODE.
To add to the fun and excitement, Diablo Theatre Company has posted backstage videos on YouTube. They have added special touches, like a special children’s’ matinee on September 29 and an Oz study guide.
The production features Olivia Hytha (Dorothy), Jack Sale (Scarecrow/Hunk), Josh Milbourne (Tin Man/Hickory), Danny Cozart (Lion/Zeke), Suzie Shepard (Wicked Witch/Ms. Gulch), Michelle Johnson (Glinda/Auntie Em), Doug Boyd (Guard/Winkie Leader/Uncle Henry) and Jeff Seaberg (Wizard of Oz/Professor Marvel).
So audiences can enjoy a beloved old favorite with a fresh, exciting energy. Imagine a break-dancing Tin Man and a Scarecrow who knows the Bugaloo. Sounds good to us.
Diablo Theatre Company performs at Lesher Center for the Arts at 1601 Civic Drive in Walnut Creek. Tickets are $17-$48, and can be purchased at (925) 943-7469.
