There's already a lot of excitement for Diablo III's first expansion, Reaper of Souls. Fans are holding out hope that this expansion will fix a lot of the core game's issues, such as item balance and general reliance on the real-money Auction House.
Still, this is a Blizzard game, and there's been no word about a release date for some time now. Earlier today, however, Blizzard revealed that Reaper of Souls would be released on March 25th, 2014.
As is the case with most Blizzard games, there are a number of different versions and ways to purchase the expansion.
- The Standard package includes the expansion, and not much else. It will be available for download for $39.99.
- The Digital Deluxe package includes the expansions, special gear recipes, and a few extras for use in Blizzard's other games. It will be available for $59.99 when the game is released.
- The Collector's Edition includes everything from the Digital Deluxe package, as well as a mouse pad, Behind-the-Scenes DVDs, and the obligatory art book. Note: The Collector's Edition is retail-only, so don't expect to download it at midnight.
Reaper of Souls definitely hearkens back to fully-fledged PC expansions - Blizzard promises that the game will feature not only the expansion content, but an entirely new way to play the game, dubbed Adventure Mode. Along with the inevitable closure of the problematic Auction House, Reaper of Souls carries a lot of promise, but we'll have to wait until March to see if it can bring players back to Diablo III.
