“Diablo III” has made the jump from PC to console and the critics reviews are in. Despite all the controversy over changes made to the console version of the game popular opinion is positive for the recently released version of the game.
The console compatible version of “Diablo III” was released over a year after the game was originally released for the PC. Blizzard got a lot of press for the real money auction house pioneered in the PC game. The console version doesn't have the real money auction house or an in game currency one.
exclusion of the feature seems to be seen as a fairly positive move. Issues with loot drops and the auction house plagued “Diablo III” for a while after release. While the issues have been primarily fixed with wave after wave of patches the console version of the game seems to be much more balanced and smooth.
the console version has mapped the traditional keyboard controls to a controller. The difference may seem clunky at first but most gamers make the transition easily enough. Another difference to the console version of “Diablo III” from the PC is that players don’t have to be online. Without a connection to BattleNet console gamers are free to play the game offline.
They also don’t get the auction house or cross-platform play. On console “Diablo” can be played with multiplayer online or offline. Aside from a few awkward transitions to the new platform general consensus seems to be that “Diablo III” is better on console than PC.
Oli Welsh from EuroGamer states, “Diablo 3 on console is one of the best co-op games money can buy.” And Xav de Matos from Joystiq comments, “Despite compromises that were made to cram the mouse-and-keyboard game onto a console, it’s a faithful and entertaining recreation of the essence of the game. . . If anything, it’s closer to what I had hoped for when Diablo 3 launched last year.”
Its great that “Diablo III” has transitioned well to consoles, letting console gamers enjoy the hack and slash fun. However PC gamers may be feeling a little offended about the original game, on Blizzards favorite platform, being disappointing and left behind when it comes to the updates made for consoles.
