"Food Network" star Paula Deen has lost over 36 pounds during the past year, thanks to portion control and treadmill workouts.
"It's about moderation," Deen told the February 2013 issue of Woman's Day. "I just needed to learn to eat a normal portion size and not overindulge."
The 5-foot-5 Paula, who slimmed down from a size 18 to a 10, wants to lose an additional 12 to 15 pounds, but says her weight-loss goal isn't motivated entirely by vanity.
"I want to be here for my grandchildren," says Deen. "I think about them every day. My daddy was dead at 40. My mother was dead at 44. And look—I'm 65 and I'm still here! Waking up every morning is very exciting for me, to see what the day is going to bring."
Paula, who was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in 2008, also walks on the treadmill every day for at least 30 minutes, and has drastically cut back on portion sizes and sugary foods.
Deen, who now follows a high-protein, low-carb diet, still occasionally eats pies and other Southern comfort foods, but in moderation.
"Now we do a three-ounce portion of steak, which my husband, Michael, weighs on a scale, and I'll sear it in a skillet or put it on the grill," says Paula. "We'll sauté the green beans but without bacon. And maybe a tomato salad with onions. No bread!"
