DFW local artist featured on 97.9 the Beat "Raising the Bar" with J.KRUZ!
When people think of Texas, many think of rodeo, cowboys, herds of cattle, and oil rigs. What some may find surprising is that entertainment and tons of talent are found in the heart of Texas. Some of the best talent and entertainment comes from North Texas in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area! It’s no wonder American Idol and X-Factor hold auditions in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area every season. Each season, thousands of singers stand in line for a chance of a life time to be seen by millions of weekly television viewers.
Is Reality Show TV talent competitions overly saturated? Some artists and singers still believe in the old fashion way of gaining national exposure or getting discovered by major record executives. These ways include performing in night clubs and/or various local venues, joining record pools, networking/street promotions, and support from local radio stations. This holds truth for 17 year old R&B/Pop/Soul Recording Artist, Rumill of Dallas.
This former Coppell High School student released her debut single, “Not the 1 for me” at the age of 15 in 2010. Since then, Rumill has recorded three additional singles, “World Go Round”, “Fall Back”, and her most recent release, “Free My Soul”. Currently, Rumill is #1 on Reverbnation R&B/Soul local charts and has entered the Top 100 US Charts.
Rumill has performed at numerous venues including House of Blues Underground, Six Flags over Texas, Keepin it Real Teen Summit, 97.9 the Beat Summer Tours, Wet Willies and Hard Rock Cafe in Memphis, TN, and 2010 and 2011 Harambee Festivals and Kwanzaa Fests to name a few. Although Rumill receives airplay from internet radio stations and exposure through social websites, like many artists, she lacks support from local radio stations. She says, “The road has been long but steady”.
But things recently took a turn for Rumill when local radio personality J.KRUZ featured Rumill on a segment of his show, “Raising the Bar” on 97.9 the Beat. “Raising the Bar” is a weekly segment of J.KRUZ’s show that highlights up and rising local artists in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area every Wednesday night around 11:30. Selected artists’ songs are played on-air; a studio interview video is recorded for You Tube and featured on 97.9’s website.
After viewing the You Tube video clip, Radio Program Director and Production Manager, Mitch Faulkner had plenty to say. He commented that J.KRUZ is a great young radio talent blowing up in Dallas Radio-One. Faulkner explains that so many stations are too busy trying to keep up with stations outside of their own markets until we have diluted the listening experience and dumbed down our listeners; not only from the music point of view but also from the community involvement and information. He expresses that he elevates the efforts of folk like J.KRUZ and hope that Radio One sees the value in promoting local talent across the board in other markets. Faulkner ended with American Idol is not needed to show us our stars if we get our heads out of the stars and look down the street.
Being selected for “Raising the Bar” is not easy. It is obvious that Rumill had the right ingredients in order to be selected for the show. She definitely has the talent. Not only is Rumill a singer, she is also a songwriter.
