Dexter rebounds their way to 56-41 victory over Stearns

DEXTER-- The Dexter Tigers girls basketball team used a 47-14 rebounding advantage to earn a 56-41 victory over Stearns at Ed Guiski gymnasium on Tuesday evening.

Stearns jumped out to a 9-2 lead and took their biggest lead of the game when Raychel Alley put in two of her game high 23 points to make the score 14-6 late in the first quarter.

Megan Peach scored on an assist from Michaela White in the final seconds of the first half to give the Tigers a 21-20 halftime lead.

The Tigers went on a 17-2 run to start the third quarter.

"Too many turnovers in the first half prevented us from getting post touches," Dexter coach Jody Grant said. "In the second half, we did a better job taking care of the ball."

Stearns scored the final six points of the third quarter to cut the Dexter lead to 38-28.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Minutemen cut the lead to eight on two different occasions.

Dexter put the game away with a 9-2 run to take a 50-35 lead with 3:45 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Peach led the Tigers with 16 points, 17 rebounds, and two steals.

Abbie Melvin recorded 14 points (all in the second half), 18 rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in her last home game for the Tigers.

Peyton Watson scored 12 points and pulled down six rebounds.

White recorded nine points, seven assists, five steals, and three rebounds.

Tasha Pratt returned from an injury that had her sidelined since January 14th. Pratt scored five points in nine minutes.

Dexter (13-4) will finish the regular season with a game at Howland against PVHS on Thursday.

The Tigers will finish as the number four seed in class C. The first tournament game for Dexter will be February 18th at 2 p.m. in a quarterfinal contest at Cross Insurance Center.

Emma Alley recorded 11 points, four steals, and three assists for the Minutemen.

Raycel Alley added four assists and three rebounds.

Jess Girsa chipped in with five points and two steals. Mackenzie Carter recorded two points, six rebounds, and two steals.

Stearns (8-9) will finish their regular season when they travel to rival Schenck on Thursday.

The Minutemen look to be in good position to host a class D prelim game next week.
