DEXTER-- The tennis nets are still not up at the courts in Dexter. That has not stopped the Dexter Tigers tennis team(s) from getting ready for their upcoming regular season that is scheduled to begin in nine days.
The Tigers girls tennis team finished 8-4 and eighth in the MPA heal point standings last season. They defeated Schenck in a prelim match, before falling to Mattanawcook in the quarterfinals.
They graduated five of their top seven players from the 2013 roster.
"It will be a young team with a lot to learn. Doubles players from a year ago will have to move up to the singles ranks,"Tigers coach Peter Murray said. "Our expectations are that we will improve every day and make a run at a play-off spot."
Aleah Salsbury and Madison Provost played doubles together last year. They will both need to play singles this season.
The Tigers boys tennis team should be much improved with the majority of their team returning. Dexter finished 3-9 and 13th in the MPA heal point standings.
"Several players back from last year. We'll have to mix in some new players, but hopefully be able to improve on last year's performance and make the play-offs," Murray said. "We are experienced - the top three players all return from last year."
Spencer Fitzgerald, Taran Curtis and Nick Colomy are the three top players that Murray mentioned above. With those players returning, the Tigers could compete for a playoff spot in class C.
The first two matches for Dexter are scheduled to be at home against George Stevens and PCHS. Click here for the full schedule. Please check with the school, the MPA website, or the Eastern Maine sports Facebook page for schedule updates.
