Dexter high school 2014 softball preview

The female student/athletes at Dexter high school are used to competing in post season play.

The Tigers traditionally have quality teams that reach postseason play in girls basketball, field hockey, cheering, girls soccer, and softball.

This spring should be no different for first year coach Mark Pullen and the Dexter softball team.

"The expectation is to compete for a championship. That isn't to say that there isn't a lot of work that needs to be done before that can be accomplished, but these girls are used to winning and that isn't by accident,"Pullen said. "We have excellent athletes who expect a lot of themselves, and for me to expect less than that of them would be a mistake."

Everything runs through Bucksport, when it comes to class C softball. The Bucks have won two straight state championships since moving down to class C before the 2012 season.

"Obviously, when you're looking at class c everyone has to go through Bucksport, but hopefully as we wait for the weather to turn we use that as motivation to get as much done as we can in the gym,' Pullen said. "The biggest challenge is replacing a group of seniors that were mainstays in the lineup for the majority of their high school careers."

Abbey Jordan and Kolby Kain provide the Tigers with a solid pitching duo.

"Pitching and depth (are strengths), I think we have at least two pitchers who are ready to not only contribute, but be successful at this level,"Pullen said. "Both have put in a lot of time working on their mechanics in the off-season, and both will be ready to produce for us this season."

Abbie Melvin, Tasha Pratt, Michaela White, Peyton Watson, Cayla Wyman, Macie Melvin, and Kaitlyn Hall are among the key players for the Tigers.

Pullen said, "We have a lot of girls who have been waiting their turn, and I think are ready to show what they can do with their opportunities."

The Tigers are scheduled to open the regular season on April 24th when they host Foxcroft Academy. They travel to high powered Bucksport on April 26th. Click here for the full Dexter softball schedule.
