DEXTER-- The 2013 Dexter Tigers football team will be looking to build on the success of the 2012 Tigers.
Dexter went 6-2 during the 2012 regular season. They fell to Bucksport in the class C quarterfinals.
The successful season was under first year coach Kevin Armstrong and came after going 1-15 combined during the 2010 and 2011 seasons.
Armstrong is hoping his team can compete with the big boys in the LTC (Little Ten Conference) again this year.
"Everything we are going to get this year, we are going to have to earn. I do not think there is a team in the LTC that is not going to be decent,"Armstrong said. "Wherever we end up will be dictated by hard work and week to week preparation. We can't look past anyone that is for sure."
Trevor Fogarty returns as the leader and quarterback of the Tigers offense.
"Trevor is a great athlete, he will be the leader of our offense,"Armstrong said. "It is all going to start with him."
Spencer Fitzgerald is the leader of a very strong offensive line. Chris King will play center and be a key part of the success for the Tigers.
"Spencer Fitzgerald to me is going to be the highlight of our offensive line. He is big, physical, smart, hard worker. He does not let the small things go. He is a guy who wants to work at perfection. He is going to be the anchor of that offensive line,"Armstrong said. "We have another senior on the offensive line. Chris King is our center. He is very capable of doing some really good things for us this year."
Last year, Armstrong feels a strength was the size of his team. This year, the team is quicker and not quite as big. With the new players and new strengths, the Tigers will be using a new offensive scheme.
"We have a new run blocking scheme and a new offensive scheme this year. For the kids to see it and get on the field and actually do it, I feel pretty good for where our team is at the moment,"Armstrong said. "I think we have really good team speed this year. Last year, I feel we had decent size. This year, I feel our team as a whole our team will be very fast."
Cameron Ross will be a big part of the Dexter offense.
"In our backfield, Cameron Ross is starting at one of our wing back positions. He is very fast, very athletic,"Armstrong said. "Last year, he came in a little late so he didn't get the full package. This year, he came in with plenty of time and understood what is going on. He is going to be a very big asset to us this year."
The Tigers will have to play the big boys in class D early in the season.
