DEVO at Lollapalooza 2010

"Do you believe in DE-evolution?" DEVO asked the mixed crowd Friday afternoon at Lollapalooza. Fans both young and old responded with resounding cheers. Although their most popular hit Whip It, came out  late in the set, they had the crowd from beginning to end.

In true DEVO fashion, the stage was decorated in multi-colored light screens with a variety of images flashing across them at any given time and they had almost as many costume changes as Lady Gaga herself, each one more interesting than the last.

The men came out dressed in gray jumpsuits with the name 'DEVO' imprinted on the left lapel and each member wore a gray mask that only covered the top half of their heads. Later they took off the jackets of the suits to reveal black t-shirts that of course said DEVO, and put on their blue "energy domes" to play Whip It as they threw extra hats out into the crowd. Their energy was fun and kitschy and every one was in anticipation of what they were going to do next.

One more costume change occurred, where the men came back out on the stage wearing yellow jumpsuits with black belts and went on to play fan favorites Uncontrollable Urge, Mongoloid and Gates of Steel. The sound quality was great, even across the fields and the heat didn't stop the men from bringing their art-rock, new wave, surrealist science fiction style and sounds to the amped up crowd, proving that even after a nine studio albums, they've only just begun.
