The New Jersey Devils announced today that they have signed camp try-out and former Devil Petr Sykora to a one-year contract for $650,000.
Sykora was a member of the Devils 2000 Stanley Cup team and rejoins the Devils after splitting last season playing in Russia and the Czech Republic.
Sykora had an excellent training camp and proved he can still play in the NHL. He registered two goals and an assist in four preseason games. Sykora was certain to be signed after the Devils traded David Steckel to the Toronto Maple Leafs yesterday for a fourth round draft pick in 2012. This was enough salary cleared off the cap to offer Sykora a deal.
The Devils have assigned the number 15 to Sykora, which was previously worn by David Steckel in this preseason, and last by former team captain Jamie Langenbrunner during the regular season before he was traded on January 7th.
Defenseman Anton Stralman, also in camp on a try-out, remains unsigned and without a contract at this time.
