Device Brewing Company offers great beer in Sacramento

Device Brewing opened their doors in late 2013, and has won over the beer crowd with their robust beers. They are open three days a week (Thursday-Saturday) to the public, and their modest facilities support a tasting room that overlooks their brewing and serving area. Food trucks are regular visitors, and their website shows who's due in to serve their customers two weeks in advance. Owner Ken Anthony started like so many by brewing at home. His passion for big beers shows through in the beer lineup. No wheat beers, or lighter ales like a Blonde Ale that is typically an easy beer for the uninitiated. The Amber Ale is the mildest of the bunch, and like the Sweet Stout, not as hoppy as their big sellers. These are very good, but the IPA and Double IPA (many times referred to as an Imperial IPA for beer judging purposes) are the highlights. These are part of the regular beers, and there are rotating specialties. The Russian Imperial Stout is one of the regular beers making this place look like the ultimate Sacramento brewery for big beers that do not disappoint. Growlers and half growlers are available for beer-to-go.

For Sacramento Beer Week, Ken offered an informal homebrew competition that offered the winner the opportunity to make a recipe. The winner was Phil Csik of Elk Grove, and the Belgian Blond Ale was chosen by BJCP judges Dan Petrie, Dwight Bradish, and David Teckam along with DBI beer distribution representative Dave Morrow from over 40 entries. This was done in early February to allow enough time to be brewed. The beer hit the taps at the beginning of Beer Week and was reported by Ken to be "selling like crazy" during their busy Beer Week.

For Ken, this is comfortable as a small brewery without huge ambitions. Ken does not see much regarding large expenditures like additions. It's not too hard to envision Device being successful for a long time, and expanding their creativity in some way. Read more of Ken's story on their website.
