Devastation for Canada in short track speed skating

According to the 2014 Sochi website on Thursday, Canada will not be in the men's 5000m short track speed skating relay final on February 21 after they were eliminated in the semi-finals.

Team Canada got off to a slow start in the semi-finals, but found themselves far back of their competitors when Francois Hamelin of Sainte-Julie, Quebec fell.

There will be a five nation final that will include Russia, China, the Netherlands, Kazakhstan and the United States.

This will be only the second time in Olympic history that Canada will not medal in the men's 5000m short track speed skating relay event, and the first time since the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer. Team Canada won the Olympic gold medal in the men's 5000m relay at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games in Nagano, the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver.

In other short track speed skating action, Olympic gold medalist Charles Hamelin of Levis, Quebec has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 1000m short track speed skating event on Saturday, while his girlfriend Marianne St-Gelais of Roberval, Quebec finished in seventh place in the women's 500m short track speed skating event on Thursday.
