According to Wednesday's NBC New York, there will be no happily ever after for the senior Newfoundland who saved his family from a devastating fire in Westchester County, N.Y.
Nero's body was not initially found in the burned out residence, leading his family to hope that he had escaped and ran; since his disappearance, many people in the community were searching for the presumably lost dog.
Nero's actions on the day of the fire enabled his family to escape and survive; the family considers him to be a hero.
Giulio Elieso, Nero's guardian, told NBC New York:
You have no idea, I feel like I lost a son,
Without him, I would have lost my wife and my daughter in the fire.
