Deutsche Bank Championship 2009: Furyk, O'Hair share 2nd-round lead at 12-under

Norton, MA -- With double eagles, eagles, and birdies flying all over TPC Boston, players are going low during the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Jim Furyk and Sean O’Hair put on a clinic Saturday morning, with O’Hair firing a 7-under 64 and Furyk a 67 to share the lead at 12-under. But Australian rookie Marc Leishman was off the charts, pounding a 9-under 62 to sit two back of the leaders heading into Sunday’s third round.

Leishman is tied for second with Retief Goosen, who carded a 4-under 67 to go with his first-round score of 65.

Woods joins birdie parade. Tiger Woods may finally be making a move. He made a birdie on the par-4 12th hole to move to 2-under, after struggling mightily Friday and much of Saturday. With 73 players at the cut line of 1-under or better, Woods’ birdie gave him some breathing room and some much-needed momentum.

Woods made par at 13. A 10-foot birdie at 14 moved Woods to 3-under for the championship. Another birdie at 16 and Woods was suddenly in the picture, at 4-under. Woods’ previous second-round highlight was a grinding par save on the ninth. After hitting his ball all over the course, Woods chopped it back to the fairway from matted fescue grass, pitched a shot to some 10 feet from the pin, and drained his putt.

Eagles galore. Leishman ended his first nine holes with a 24-foot eagle putt for an outgoing round of 29. Not bad for a first-year PGA Tour player with only two top-10s this year.

“Walking down the first fairway, I'm like, 29?” Leishman said after his round. “But then I was like, I shot 1-under yesterday, so definitely it was in my mind for about ten seconds, and then I just knocked myself out of it.”

O’Hair had himself a fantastic round as well. The 27-year-old Texan had an eagle at the second hole, six birdies and only one bogey. O’Hair credits “perfect greens” and patience for his splendid round.

“I struck it really nicely today, gave myself a lot of opportunities for birdie and rolled it really nicely,” O’Hair said. “I feel very comfortable on these greens. They're perfect.”

Missed cut. Ernie Els is one player who won’t be around for the rest of the weekend. Shooting 75-73, the South African could not follow up his second-place tie last week at The Barclay’s with a good showing here.

The Barclay’s winner, Heath Slocum, is also likely to miss the cut. Playing with Woods and Steve Stricker (7-under for the tourney), Slocum sits at 2-over. British Open champ Stuart Cink is at even-par (71-71) and is one stroke below the cut line.

John Senden fired only the third double eagle of the PGA Tour season. Check it out at John Senden makes double eagle.
