Detroit woman survives being shot by home invader

A 72-year-old woman, a long-time resident of her west side home, is expected to recover from multiple gunshot wounds sustained Friday morning at the hands of a home invader. The DPD has a young man in custody.

Victim Thelma Truesdale was in bed in her home in the 15800 block of Sussex Street near Puritan when a man broke in at about 5:00 a.m.

The police said the motive was burglary.

The man went upstairs to Truesdale’s bedroom, where he shot her multiple times. The victim was taken to an area hospital where she is listed in temporary serious condition.

According to DPD spokeswoman Sgt Eren Stephens, responding officers followed footprints in the snow leading away from the victim’s home.

The prints led to a vacant house several blocks away. Wet tracks betrayed the presence of someone in the basement.

There police found a 23-year-old man trying to hide. They recovered a weapon.

Police arrested the young suspect.
