We have no idea who is on Detroit Tigers' General Manger Dave Dombrowski's list. It seems he is leaning towards some candidate that my not be the biggest names, but with whom played or worked for him previously and who he might feel more comfortable with. It would seem over the last few season the relationship between he and Jim Leyland became a little strained, most notably during the discussion, decisions, and fall out over the bullpen situation for the 2013 season.
James Scheml put together a list of under the radar names that the Tigers brain trust could be considering. Since two of the names on Scheml's list (Tim Wallach and Rick Renteria) have or will interview for the job, maybe there is something to the under the radar candidates.
Tony Pena feels more like a long shot than the others, mostly because of the drama that got stirred up in Kansas City while he was there. However he has been Joe Giradi's right hand and has been a finalist for many of the open jobs the past few seasons.
With that being said here are a few guys that aren't the biggest names but are next in line for a Skipper's job. Any one of them would be a fine Tigers manager:
- Dave Martinez- The Bench Coach of the Tampa Bay Rays. Many think the Tigers should go after Joe Maddon but they may not be willing to give up talent for a skipper, if that is the case landing Martinez would be a very good option. He is bilingual which will play well with the Tigers roster.
- Chip Hale- He has been the Oakland A's bench coach for the past few seasons and that means he is somewhat familiar with the Tigers as a team. He is a long time MLB level coach and he will get a lot of consideration for the other skipper jobs this off season.
- AJ Hinch- He was a Tiger for a second, but he is more of a scout. Even though he did hold down the Arizona Diamondbacks skippers gig for parts of two seasons. However it seems Dombrowski is gonna hire a guy with more big league experience.
