We really have no idea who is on Detroit Tigers General Manager Dave Dombrowski's short list. We know he has a list, every good baseball executive does, and since he has known Jim Leyland was leaving since early September we can bet he has a list of people he is ready to give this job too. We know Lloyd McClendon interviewed with him this week, but we can only speculate who else may be under consideration. Here is a look at the people who should at least get a long look for this job:
1. Torey Lovullo- It makes a lot of sense to go get the guy that helped beat you. It also makes a lot of sense to hire a first time manager that has literally one it all besides be a big league skipper. He was drafted by the Tigers, but under previous ownership. The knock here is being a first time manager on a team with a lot of egos to contend with.
2. Charlie Manuel- Sure the Philadelphia Phillies fired him, but let us not forget he won a World Series title with a roster very similar to one in Detroit. Being just the third guy to win a ring in both leagues has got to be a big motivator for him, and it seems like he is an ideal candidate for this job at least in the short term.
3. Brad Ausmus- He was a catcher for the Tigers twice, and is the hot candidate right now. He is young and had never managed a big league club. he did lead Team Israel in the WBC. However given this team is built to win now it seems unlikely he would be a great fit. Ausmus feels like he fits better with the Chicago Cubs where he could grow into the job.
4. Dusty Baker- He sure can mange big egos and anyone who can handle Barry Bonds is in line for Sainthood. He is an old school guy and that might appeal to Mike Illitch. However, he has managed some very talented clubs over the years and always come up a little short. He tends to overuse his pitchers but with a staff like the one on the Tigers that might actually be a strength.
