He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust”. Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. – Psalm 91:1-4
Detroit saints, let’s face it; these are disturbing and troubling times that we live in. Here in the state of Michigan especially. The economy is in shambles, the former mayor of Detroit just left for prison, health care just got tipped upside down, and natural disaster after natural disaster has torn the country up. It takes fortitude, courage, and plain old guts to survive in this world today. Even that is not enough, because every time we overcome one obstacle, another is visited upon us.
But, we have a Shield, a Fortress, and a Rock to hide behind. We have a safe place to run to, where the cares of this world can simply disappear. We can remove ourselves to the spiritual realm, hidden in worship, praise, prayer, and enveloped in the warmth of God’s love. The Almighty has a shelter for us to hide in, where we can get away to rejuvenate our bodies, our minds, and our spirits. He will protect us in times of trouble. When disaster strikes, He is there to walk us through. If we are not able to walk, He will carry us. When our enemies rise up against us, the Lord is there to protect us from harm, either natural or spiritual. In verse 3 of Psalm 91, it is written, “Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence”. The fowler’s snare is the rising up of our enemies, and deadly pestilence is the widespread disease that envelops this earth. An example of the Lord’s protection is missionaries that work in third world countries, yet in areas plagued by epidemic disease, never exhibit a symptom. For further reading on God’s protection of His people, read the story of King Jehoshephat in 2 Chronicles 20.
There are countless examples of God’s protection in the Bible, from Noah during the flood in Genesis; to His people Israel in Revelation. Just as verse 4 of Psalm 91 says, “His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart”. God protects those who love and obey Him. Economic downturn is not in God’s vocabulary. He owns the cattle on a thousand hills, all of the silver and all of the gold, and will shower it upon His people (see Malachi 3:10). His faithfulness endures as your shield and rampart (defensive wall) even when yours is weak.
So, in times of trouble, disaster, poor health, or financial crisis, remember that we have wings to hide under, a place to get our bearing and face the giants. God is our forward charge and our rear guard. Just speak Hebrews 13:6, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” Meditate on and speak Hebrews 13:6 and Psalm 91:1-4 during those times of hardship and watch the deliverance of the Lord.
Until next time may God bless and keep you, and may His face shine upon you. To our Lord be praise and honor and glory and power, forever and ever. Amen.
