As Paul McCartney plays Detroit tonight (July 24), it's interesting to look back on the two shows the Beatles did there.
The group's first trip to Detroit took place on Sept. 6, 1964. The group performed two shows at the city's Olympic Stadium. The Detroit Free Press reported 3,000 fans waited to greet the group's arrival in the city.
They returned two years later to the same venue for a pair of shows on Aug. 12, 1966, the second show on theiir 1966 American tour. They played to a total of 28,000 fans, though neither was a sellout.
The Free Press reported that though there were a few signs criticizing John Lennon's comment referring to the Beatles being more popular than Jesus, Detroit fans showed their love for the group overall.
The visits to Detroit were special for the Beatles as the city was home to the Tamla-Motown label, which was the Beatles' favorite music. It'll be interesting to see if McCartney pays tribute to the music by playing a Motown hit or two.
