The Detroit Red Wings stood pat at the trade deadline, sort of.

A trade at the deadline was not necesary for the Red Wings whose roster is receiving significant change through the return of their regular players from injury.

In recent weeks the Red Wings have bolstered their lineup with the the return of Johan Franzen, Niklas Kronwall and Andreas Lilja. As good a haul as any team at the deadline. As is the case when trades happen, the Red Wings roster has encountered some attrition as Kirk Maltby had season ending shoulder surgery.

In a couple of minor transaction the Red Wings sent Kris Newbury to the New York Rangers in exchange for Jordan Owens, and sent Andy Delmore to Calgary for Riley Armstrong.

Owens, 23, was undrafted out of the Ontario Hockey League despite scoring 74 points in 60 games in his final season of junior hockey. The 6'0", 190-pound left wing is his third pro season and had 19 points in 50 games with the Rangers minor league affiliate the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.

Newbury, 28, played four games for Detroit this season scoring one goal and collecting four penalty minutes. In his first season with the Red Wings organization Newbury had 33 points in 52 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins. Newbury was signed by the Red Wings as a free agent from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Newbury was originally drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Armstrong, 25, a center, had 19 points and 55 penalty minutes in 38 games for Calgary's farm team the Kootenay Ice of the AHL. He previously played two games for the San Jose Sharks. Delmore, a 33-year old defenseman was signed by Detroit prior training camp and had 20 points in 54 games for Grand Rapids. Delmore has played 283 NHL games for Philadelphia, Nashville, Buffalo and Columbus scoring 43 goals and 101 points.

Meanwhile the Central Division was the quietest division overall at the deadline (March 3 at 3:00 pm) with the Nashville Predators making the most significant moves.
