The Detroit Pistons made the biggest news in the NBA yesterday when they cut ties with head coach Maurice Cheeks. Cheeks only coached 50 games before being fired, going 21-29 and having the team just a half game out of the final playoff spot in the (weak) Eastern Conference. Many believe the move was made so the franchise could pursue Lionel Hollins at season’s end. Assistant coach John Loyer will take over the team on an interim basis.
Pistons GM and President Joe Dumars released statement yesterday concerning Cheeks’ dismissal:
"This was a difficult decision for the organization to make but we needed to make a change. We have great respect for Maurice and appreciate his hard work."
Dumars is clearly on the hot seat as well as the team has failed to make the playoffs in the last few seasons. Dumars did construct a team that made six straight Eastern Conference Finals from 2003-08, which included two conference crowns and one NBA Championship.
